Location
I took this photo at a local “heritage park” that features old homes from when my city was first founded.Time
Believe it or not this was during midday.Lighting
I used natural midday light but he was shaded by the overhang/gutters of the old log cabin.Equipment
I used a Nikon D3400 and my 18-55mm kit lens.Inspiration
I wanted a simple photo of my son where he wasn’t looking right at the camera. I asked him to sit down in front of the door and look at the tree behind me, and for once in his life, he actually listened to me! You can see the look of concentration on his face.Editing
I am a HUGE fan of black and white and when I saw how this photo came out, I knew that I had to make it black and white. I feel like it adds some depth and emotion to it, which I love.In my camera bag
My Nikon D3400, my 18-55mm and 70-300 kit lens and my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens. I recently started pulling out the 70-300 lens and I am in love. Even though it is a kit lens and super heavy (in my opinion) I really like the smooth bokeh I get with it.Feedback
Trust your instincts. If you see a spot that might work for the look you are trying to achieve, try it out. Also, if you photograph children, try to always remember that kids will be kids and are curious creatures. Don’t always expect them to listen to you and it is okay to let them take the lead sometimes.
