This photo was taken in the Dallas,Texas Citiplace subway station. The Dallas DART train is arriving on the left. The "photos" you see along the wall were part of an extensive bi-annual indoor/outdoor art project where various mediums of art are displayed throughout the Dallas Arts District which covers many blocks in and near Downtown Dallas. The "photos" you see along the wall are actually on video monitors with slow-motion video of the eyes. It captures the viewer's attention in that as you stand there watching, someone's eyes will slowly blink. The display covered a long distance along the wall so that each time a train stopped the passengers could see a portion of this huge display. As a photographer I attempted to show the display as a whole with the train arriving along with a composite of my individual photos of some of the eyes displayed.Time
For one night, 19 city blocks in downtown Dallas were transformed into an open-air urban playground of new media art: light, video, sound, and performance. Some exhibits, such as the eyes in this photo, were displayed in other venues. This is the Cityplace DART Light Rail Station. It was approximately 11:00 pm on my way home for the night.Lighting
There was no special lighting - only the actual indoor lights for the train platform. The line of monitors of individual sets of eyes seemed endless so it was impossible to show all. I waited on several arriving trains to capture the essence of the art exhibit in the subway station.Equipment
This photo was shot with my first DSLR, an older Canon Rebel XSi with a kit lens, 18-55. The camera was set on a travel tripod which worked well for the situation.Inspiration
I was attempting to capture the essence of this art display in the train station. There were many more displayed monitors than could be captured. I took a number of individual photos.Editing
I used Photoshop to make a composite of several of the individual photos I had taken of this display in order to capture the mood and some of the artist's work.In my camera bag
I do not have fancy equipment, just an older Sony mirrorless with three lenses and a small travel tripod. Always carry extra batteries. I no longer have the Canon which created this photo.Feedback
Find an interesting spot and wait for the right conditions to occur. Perhaps you are waiting for a sunrise, or for more clouds. If you are in the city, choose a spot where there is activity and wait for that magic moment. There's a famous quote by Louis Pasteur "Chance favors the prepared mind, and opportunity favors the bold."
