Behind The Lens

Location

I was driving the country roads in rural Central Oklahoma. I had left a national wildlife refuge park and was on the way to a small state park. I didn't want to take the direct route as it's much more interesting to travel the back roads.

Time

It was late afternoon after 5:00 pm during the last week of October. I was in the process of traveling between parks in Oklahoma and still needed to arrive at my destination park before dark in order to setup camp.

Lighting

I loved the cloud movement and experimented with various shutter speeds. I settled on shutter speed of 1/6 which has definition in the clouds but with soft movement. The clouds gave the perfect atmosphere to the abandoned house.

Equipment

This was taken on an old camera, a Canon SXi - APSC, with a kit lens on a small travel tripod. It's a very basic setup and was my first DSLR. It's just a matter of having fun with whatever camera you have available.

Inspiration

I had been camping with photo friends for a few days at the previous park. One of my friends who lives in Oklahoma mentioned this area so I made a point to drive the small roads towards my next camping destination. I was a little rushed for time as it was getting close to the end of the day and I needed to be entered and set up at the next state park before dark. It's really great to enjoy time with people who share the same interest.

Editing

There wasn't a lot of color in the scene other than the dark green roof. The overgrown weeds had lost their color for the season. I wanted to go with black & white / monochrome to accentuate the wonder of the days gone by. You can still see the shades in the attic window. Makes me wonder if children may have grown up there and looked out those windows many times I processed this in Lightroom and used a B&W preset. I sometimes use presets as a starting point and then tweak the adjustments from there.

In my camera bag

I no longer have the Canon though it took great photos. I now carry another "old" camera as I switched to the Sony Nex-7 mirrorless. I fell in love with the mirrorless system for the smaller size and weight, but especially for being able to view exactly how your photo will look with your chosen settings. I carry the standard Sony kit 18-55 lens, Sony 55-210 zoom, and a Sigma fixed 30 mm, all E-mount lenses with a polarizer filter, extra SD cards, 4 batteries and a small travel tripod.

Feedback

As you can see through this post, I do not have any fancy equipment. I look forward to upgrading to a full frame setup, probably in the Sony A series, but in the meantime I hope to inspire you to know it's not the equipment. Of course great equipment dan make a difference, but the important thing is just to go out with any camera in hand and have fun with it. Experiment. Change the settings. Take a series of photos with different settings and examine them later when you are home again. Have fun. That's what it's all about.
