The Owens Valley of California is technically an arid high desert, but there is plenty of water around, including water used on this cattle range. This is thanks to the up to 14,000 foot Sierra Nevada Mountain range which captures the moisture from Pacific Coast storms as snow and rain which then melts and flows down its steep eastern escarpments to the valley floor. Here the water flowing down from the mountains in those creeks, rivers and streams not only filter into the valley's aquifer which also comes back up in springs, but it is also diverted into many canals to water the fields like this for cattle, horses, and farming. Thanks to the mountains and the water they provide, this high desert valley is ironically very wet and green most of the year. Here it is April and the mountains are still covered in snow!
