Mallards are common dabbling ducks, but common doesn't mean plain. They are one of the handsomest birds I am privileged to see. The beautiful green head of the drake stands out. The brillant orange feet are something I rarely get to see. Here in central Utah they are shy. I was fortunate to find a pair along an irrigation canal. They paused just long enough for me to get a few exposures. In seconds they launched into the air and gave their distinctive quacks as they flew off.
