Behind The Lens

Location

I specialise in composite "time blending" photography and this one is no exception. This photograph was taken nor so far from my home in Moscow, Russia. This is a famous and one of "Seven Sisters" buildings around Moscow. This one is a Moscow State University skyscraper reflecting in a still manmade fountain pond.

Time

As I mention above I specialise in time blending photography (composite) so there is not one time of the day, but rather two. Sunset and blue hour combined into single photo. I have to wait for about 1h30minutes from beginning of sunset to the time when building is lit up (blue hour).

Lighting

I wanted to make this image unique, since this location was photographed so many times over. So I planed to combine a beautiful sunset clouds with a blue hour lights on a building.

Equipment

I use Canon EOS 6D with Tokina AT-X 16-28 Pro FX f2.8 lens at 20mm. Benro tripod and Acratech GPSS bullhead. Also I use intervalometer.

Inspiration

I wanted to create a project with all seven sisters skyscrapers portraying with a composite shots. It will make this famous locations looking unique, like none others. This being one of my favourite and closes location so I begin with that.

Editing

As you can guess, yes :) I use Lightroom for a small adjustment to the individual shots, and then use Photoshop extensively to combine 6 shots into a single photograph. so about 10% LR and 90% PS.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I have Canon 5D mark iV with my most used lens Sigma 14-24 f2.8, then Sigma 24-105mm f4, Samyang 24mm tilt-shift lens and Irix 11mm f4. Also I have Canon 80D with Tokina 11-20mm lens. A few PolarPro 82mm Cvartzline ND filters. Gitzo traveler 1 tripod and Acratech GPSS or Nomar bullheads. if I carry second camera then I use Induro tripod for that.

Feedback

Check out tutorials on composite photography but don't mixed it up with "collage technique", where photographers just put entirely new things in the photograph (like new sky or new objects). Arm yourself with patience for a long, up to 2.30h, shoot and even longer post-processing. But at the end you can end up with a totally unique photos of the place then many photograph already. Good luck.
