Last Sunday Xander and I went down to the beach. There was someone I wanted to visit and introduce Xander too. I call it Mammoth. I know you're probably thinking "You wanted to introduce your son to a long dead stump more or less?" I discovered Mammoth many years ago in the spring and every spring since I go to it, to commune if you will. It's hard to explain being drawn to a tree. It radiates a strength and calmness from it. When I'm there I try to imagine what Mammoth was once like. Most often I will just sit next to it take in the energy that it provides. I wanted Xander to understand that we are inexplicably linked to the world around us. I don't mean people or anything. I mean nature, trees, flowers, mountains, streams they are a part of us all. Most people do not understand that on any definable level. I wanted him to understand that too me this is not just a long dead tree but much more. It's a bridge of sorts to another plain of existence, one in which most people can neither see nor feel. When the chains of time finally catch up to Mammoth and it topples to the sand to be washed away to the deep of the lake I will mourn it as a friend lost.
