Behind The Lens

Location

In the river Ganges, near Kolkata, India, sometime in the early nineties.

Time

Early morning, right away sunrise, while taking a stroll by the river bank.

Lighting

I was facing East. With the sun directly in front of me, the river water reflected the bright orange and yellow hues. This created a silhouette of the man praying to the first rays of the rising sun.

Equipment

This is shot handheld with a Pentax K1000 camera with 50 mm normal lens using 35 mm transparency film. Recently I converted it to a digital format using an Epson scanner.

Inspiration

The rising sun, the color of the river water, and the Hindu devotee praying to the first rays of the rising sun (heliolatry), all of these inspired me to create a silhouette. I felt it would convey a message and a story from this image.

Editing

Used some minor post-processing related to exposure and contrast using Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Currently I carry a Nikon D5600 with 3 Nikkor lenses, one prime 35mm, one 18-55mm zoom, and one 55-200mm zoom.Other than this, in my camera bag, I have spare batteries & memory cards, lens cleaning brushes, hoods, filters, and accessories.

Feedback

I love street photography and try to include the "human element" in my photography, which will effectively illustrate a story, a message. If I have to describe my images using words, narrative, etc. then I know, I didn't get it right. For me, the drama, the excitement, the message, and the mood comes from the 'human element', the one "that fits" in a given frame and the background. Also, attention needs to be given to the composition, the placement of the subject. Street photography is fun, and before taking a shot, one needs to blend into an environment, study it, and then various frames pop up in front of our eyes, which we may have missed, had we not paid attention.
