Location
Lake Charm is located 17km north east of Kerang on the Murray Valley Highway in the state of Victoria, Australia. The area known as Kerang Lakes, the actual lake is one of several on either side of the highway which extends north-easterly to Lake Boga. Whilst the name may be descriptive of the lake, it is thought by one authority that it is derived from an Aboriginal word ‘charam’ meaning reed spear.Time
This was captured at sunset, the lake reflected the glorious colours as the sun was setting with an explosion of colour.Lighting
Capturing an image just after sunset with some high cloud is a perfect time as the sun is now below the horizon and when the colours explode in the sky and project some beautiful colours in the clouds.Equipment
Canon 5dMkii, Prime lens 35mm Sigma lens,Sirui tripod and Lee filters - 10 stop and graduated filter .9ndInspiration
I love how colour reflects on the water and as I was aware of the mallee district for its glorious colourful sunsets as the colours are just so vibrant with the reflection of the colours on the lake would make a wonderful image if the conditions are right with high cloud. Look for a foreground feature such as a pier or tree in the water adds to the image.Editing
I start my processing images in Lightroom: Lens corrections - Enable the Profile corrections by adding the lens profile and remove chromatic aberration, and adjust the shadows up and the highlights down, check on the whites and blacks, adjust the dehaze and add some clarity if needed, sometimes I look at the vibrance or saturation if required, add adjustments in the tone curve, sharpening check on the masking and detail and add any sharpening to image, finally I may add some post-crop vignetting. I also may further edit image in PS remove any distracting features to the image and back to LR to make final adjustments in image by checking horizon and finally may crop image. In my camera bag
I carry the Canon 5dMkii, Prime Lens 35mm Sigma and Canon 70-300mm Lens, Lee Filters, spare batteries and CF cards, Sirui tripod, lens cloths, a headlamp as usually travelling to a location in the dark for a sunrise or returning after the sun has set. Carry a hiking pole to assist as the terrain is never just a level walking path.Feedback
High cloud for a more interesting capture than just a cloudless sky at sunrise or sunset. Find a foreground feature for example the pier on the water will draw the eye to follow the landscape to the colours on the water and to the cloud colour in the sky. Using a polariser or ND filters also a benefit and always use your tripod as the images will be taken as a long exposure (as this image was taken @ F14 ISO 100 2.5sec exposure).
