Behind The Lens

Location

Bodie California an abandoned mining town now along Hwy 395

Time

Midafternoon

Lighting

Natural light coming from the windows

Equipment

Nikon D300 with an 18-70 lens with a Rodenstock 2.5 CPL filter on the front

Inspiration

My so much better half and I decided early one morning to drive to Bodie to see what it is all about. After driving for 3 hours we came to the turnoff and after another 7 miles down a single lane road came to a trashed dirt road that led to this awesome abandoned town.

Editing

Well duh.... opened up the shadows added a little contrast and some clarity to get it the way I saw it then a smidgen bit of warmth to give it the glow that I remembered.

In my camera bag

Hmmmm well that depends on where I go, most of the time I carry a Nikon D300 with two lenses an 18-70 F3.5 and a 80-400 plus my trusty Hasselblad 500c for B&W film with the standard 80mm lens.

Feedback

I shot through the window of the place so you need a good CPL to take out any reflections from the window pane. On this shot, I pressed the lens right up the glass to get rid of any reflections but still had to dial the CPL to get rid of some of the highlights on the table and window. IF you go take a tripod when shooting through the windows since you can't enter any of the rooms because it is a historical location. Take a few memory cards or plenty of film because you will busy, it is a remarkable place to go. Go pack up your camera bags clear your cards load lots of film and get going now is the time to see it while the wildflowers are blooming. Bring plenty of water during the summer it is nasty hot and if you have breathing problems be aware it is at 8379 ft above sea level if your a flatlander just a heads up. to read more about this place go here. https://www.bodie.com/
