Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was a DIY set up in a friend's garage. There was no special lighting, no backdrops, just me, my friend, a blank wall, and a borrowed camera.

Time

This photo was taken on a Saturday evening in 2018, my senior year of high school. I had to do several pieces this day for my AP art portfolio so that I was able to edit and still meet the deadline. My friend had never done any modeling before and I had never really directed and worked with human models before so I pretty much just had him do any poses that felt natural.

Lighting

The room in which we took these photos was a garage, so the lighting was not the best to work with. At the time I was stressed about the photos turning out too dark, but once I went to edit them I saw that the lighting actually set a moody tone that I liked. The tone that was set by the lighting also helped me choose what colors I wanted to use.

Equipment

The Camera was one that was lent to me by my high school. Unfortunately, I don't remember what kind of camera it was.

Inspiration

While working on my AP Portfolio, I had to choose a concentration and I chose hands. I think that as someone who frequently talks with their hands and uses their body to further express themselves while having a conversation or telling a story I was very intrigued by how just singling out a single part of that expression could still tell so much. With this photo, in particular, I wanted to do something fun and would pop but also have hands that are so natural and unique to every person have this repetitive, symmetrical, and unnatural feel.

Editing

I used Photoshop to edit coloring and lighting.

In my camera bag

The camera was borrowed, I don't think I even had a bag.
