Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of a Male Phidippus regius jumping spider in my home studio. He was sitting really still while eating so I took advantage of the moment.

Time

This is one of my favorite close-ups of this spider. Ive had him since he hatched and have taken many photos along the way but this spur of the moment photo while he was sitting in the lid of his container turned out to be the best.

Lighting

I use a Kuang Ren KX-800 twin flash with a custom diffuser with little to no backlighting.

Equipment

I shoot freehand single shots with a Canon T7i married to a Venus Laowa 60mm manual focus UM lens coupled with a 21mm extension tube.

Inspiration

My love of Jumping spiders and macro photography matured at the same moment that my wife found a non native jumping spider in her storebought grapes. I grabbed a camera she had bought me a couple of years before that I rarely used and snapped a quick photo. I just happened to click at the perfect focus allowing me to see the amazing amount of detail in these beautiful spiders. Since then I have taught myself what I needed to pursue this passion.

Editing

I send my photos from camera to my ipad via wifi and import them into Lightroom CC where I adjusted for minimal exposure corrections.

In my camera bag

I travel light, I keep a lens cloth and a change of batteries. I can be out for 6 hours at a time but I find keeping excessive gear on me only hinders me. I only shoot macro so my lens never leaves the body, they are quite literally married. I bought both the body and the lens new and put them together upon opening. Dust inside the lens of a macro photographers camera is a no no.

Feedback

A steady hand, lots of patience, a good knowlege of your gear and lighting techniques, and a passion for your subject are what I find help me in getting best captures.
