Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in front of a wall near London Bridge. I was looking for something coloured and i found this street will all walls painted with dirrefent colours (yellow, purple, pink, orange) and, to be honest I wasn't thinking I would have use that grey one but at the end it turned up being the most interesting.

Time

I can't really remember when I took this photo but it was between 2 and 4pm, after lunch. The photoshoot was turning to an end and with the model, Silvia, started having fun trying to kill a bit the tiredness.

Lighting

I shot this photo outdoor, on a cloudy but warm day at the end of august so the light was already diffused, but in order to give a bit of a contrast on her face I placed on the left hand side my flashgun on a stand without diffusion, at about a couple of metres far from the model at the face level, and a big reflector on right hand side at the bottom in order to give a bit of light on the dress.

Equipment

This photo was shot with my old Canon EOS 5D MKII with my 24-70mm L USM, at about 50mm, No tripod but I used a flash on the left hand side for her face and a reflctor for the dress.

Inspiration

The inspiration came simply looking at the clothes that the fashion designer, Andrada Bodea, produced. The clothes she had on that collection were very dark, mostly black but also grey, always with some coloured details (purple strings, white draw, etc...), so from there I decided that a contrast was needed and one night, while I was walking toward a pub with a friend, I popped into this road with the walls painted full of colours.

Editing

I did some post-process on this photo but less that others. I was editing this photoshoot thinking of fashion magazine submission so I tried to edit the picture flawlessly in order to have a perfect skin on the model, Silvia (even if she was already perfect), and on the clothes. But I think the makority of work done on this picture was for the contrast and color correction: I gave a bit more of a hint of blue in the shadow and green on the hightlight, boosting with some pink the skin.

In my camera bag

When I pack up my bagback I put my camera of course, now a Canon EOS 5D MK IV, and my 24-70, I think the perfect lens for any occasion: great for events, I can get a good result on product and portraiture going to 70mm and at 24 I can have a good result even on property, and of course my flashgun, the 580EX, you never know when you'll need extra light!

Feedback

It's always so difficult give an advice to other photographer, mostly because sometimes a good picture is taken also by luck. In this case is a mixture of reason: make sure you have a model who can pose, Silvia was not a professional model but had experience plus she was a dancer, that was the reason why she came up with this interesting pose, when edit a photo don't overdue, sometimes photographer tend to overdue too much using only lightroom or camera raw and boosting the clarity in order to give more contrast but I would suggest to use photoshop along with curves and levels: you will be able to control better what's in the highlight and what's in the darkness, the colour and the hue.
