Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Pacific Ocean, and our whale watching tour launched from Dana Point, California.

Time

The photo was taken at sunset.

Lighting

Golden hour shots are so appealing and vibrant, whether the subject is portrait or landscape. It's the perfect time to shoot for a moody result.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3100 without flash to capture the image.

Inspiration

My inspiration came from the setting - I wanted to remember this time on our honeymoon trip and our unique experience of being on the ocean at dusk, spotting wildlife.

Editing

I didn't really doctor the image much, just darkened the shadows and lightened the highlights a little, pulling out the definition.

In my camera bag

My Spyder camera strap is my best and most-used accessory.

Feedback

Don't be hesitant to keep and share photos that appear slightly blurry or less-than-perfect. It can change the mood of the photo, soften harsh features, and lend interest to the image.
