It is believed to have been built around 1866. It was founded by Mrs. S.J. Neil who came to Amelia County a year prior in search of her husband, a Union soldier who died during the Civil War. Mrs. Neil decided to stay in Amelia and founded six local churches for African Americans, most of them freed slaves, as well as an institute to train young black women to be teachers for new African American schools throughout Southside Virginia.
