Location
Safety Beach, Mornington Peninsula. We was on a short break away staying at Mount Eliza and was on our way back to our Air bnb. Not only were we lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to pull off the road and capture this moment, it also happened to be where the beach boxes were, adding more colour.Time
Sunrise and sunsets are my favourite times of the day. We had gone out for dinner and was trying to time it so that we could cross the road to the beach to capture a sunset. We took many shots on the beach and I was happy. We got in the car to start our drive back as the sun continued to set and as we turned a corner we couldn’t believe how the colours had changed. Luckily for us there was a car park off the road so we just had to stop (along with several other cars pulling in quick) to capture the moment.Lighting
It was the end of an extreme fire danger day, so it had been a very hot day, which produced the fabulous colour. The earlier sunset photos had more pastel colours. By the time we took this one it had become darker, but light enough to capture the colours of the beach boxes.Equipment
This ‘spur of the moment’ shot was taken on my Microsoft Lumia 640 XL LTE with no flash.Inspiration
I am a sunrise and sunset lover. I think because they’re so unique and can be naturally beautiful, some with such lovely colours both pastels and bold and calm or dramatic. Being on a short break by the coast was a perfect opportunity to see what sunset would bring. My hubby is used to me ‘chasing’ sunsets and was happy for us to cross over onto the beach after dinner. He was as surprised and excited as I was when we drove further along the road and saw this and I didn’t have to ask him twice to pull in to capture the moment.Editing
Although the colours were naturally amazing they are not so pastel in this shot as Adobe photoshop was used to bring out the colour of the beach boxes. In my camera bag
Since this photo I now have a Canon EOS 1500D 18-55mm but also carry my zoom lens and sphere for occasional use. I do find my camera captures the true colours of sunsets better, so I need training on how to get similar results using my Canon.Feedback
If you are after a sunset, a hot day is a good start. Think about where the sun will set and where is a good spot to capture it. You can look up sunset times for this area and get there in advance. Sunsets can change quickly and go from ‘nothing to something’ in no time but also disappear quickly, so be prepared and leave the rest to nature.
