I made this image during one of my Fine Art Portrait workshops. Normally I light portraits with this kind of styling with a studio flash and a 150cm octabox. This image arose because I wanted to try out a new LED ringlight and it turned out that this kind of light was perfect for this image.
Equipment
I shot this image with my Fujifilm X-T2 and the XF 35mm 1.4. Light source was a LED ringlight mounted on my camera.
Inspiration
I very often shoot portraits with this kind of styling. I really love this soft pastel colors and flowers in the hair. To light it with a ringlight was new.
Editing
RAW-Development was made with Lightroom and the beauty retouching was made in Photoshop. After removing some imperfections with the spot healing brush I used the frequency separation to get an even skin. With dodge and burn I did some contouring and the color look was finally made with Alien Skin Exposure.
In my camera bag
This depends on what I am going to photograph. My bag is always as small as possible. For example, if I am planning a outdoor portrait shoot, I put my Fuji X-T2 or X-H1 in my bag and maximum three fixed lenses. For portraits, that would be the Fuji XF 35mm, 56mm and 90mm. With a full frame camera I would use a 50mm, 85mm and 135mm. For street photography my bag is even smaller, in fact really small. There I only take my Fuji X-T20 with me, the pancake 27mm lens and the 14mm super-wide angle. For this type of photography, it is most important for me to be as flexible as possible and to attract as little attention as possible. Of course, in my studio, I have all my equipment available.
Feedback
Ringlight works quite well for headshots with fancy and extreme styling. The cool thing is, that you see directly how the light affects the face. Bring the light as close as possible to the face and make sure that the person looks directly into the camera.
