Porto OTE is the second city and the fourth most populous municipality of Portugal, located in the northwest of the country and capital of the Metropolitan Area of ​​Porto (NUTS III and metropolitan area), of the North region (NUTS II ) and the District of Porto. The city is considered a global city range. [5] The municipality, with 41,42 km ² of area, has a population of 237 591 inhabitants (2011) [7] within its administrative limits, being subdivided into seven parishes.

It is the city that gave the name to Portugal - from very early (c. 200 BC), when it was called Portus Cale, later to become the capital of the Portucalense County, from where Portugal was formed. It is also a city known worldwide for its wine, its bridges and contemporary architecture and old, its historic center, classified as a World Heritage by UNESCO, [9] for the quality of its restaurants and for its gastronomy, [10] for its main football team, Futebol Clube do Porto, by its main public university: the University of Porto, ranked among the 200 best universities in the world and among the 100 best universities in Europe, [11] as well as the quality of its hospitals. [12]

It is the seat of the Porto Metropolitan Area, which comprises 17 municipalities with 1 757 413 inhabitants in 1,900 square kilometers, with a population density of 1098 inhabitants per km², making it the 13th most populous urban area in the European Union and the second most populous area (NUTS III) in Portugal. Oporto and the Porto Metropolitan Area constitute the structural nucleus of the North Region, which has a population of 3 689 609 inhabitants (Census of 2011), [13] being therefore the most populous region (NUTS II) of Portugal [ 14] It comprises 8 subregions or level III units (NUTS III). [15]

Porto, together with the neighboring municipalities of Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos, forms the Atlantic Front of Porto, [16] which constitutes the most urbanized population center of the Metropolitan Area, located on the coast, bounded on the west by the Atlantic Ocean , with the structural influence of the estuary of the Douro River, [17] which links Gaia to Porto. The city is the most important of the highly industrialized coastal zone of the North Region, where most of the country's most important economic groups are located, such as Altri, Amorim - Corticeira Amorim Group, Banco BPI, BIAL, EFACEC, Frulact, Lactogal, Millennium BCP, Porto Editora, Sonae, Unicer or the RAR Group. The Business Association of Portugal is headquartered in Porto. The North Region is the only Portuguese region that exports more than it imports.
