The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Celorico de Basto, to the northeast by Mondim de Basto, to the east by Vila Real and by Santa Marta de Penaguião, to the south by Baião, Marco de Canaveses and Penafiel, to the west by Lousada and to the northwest by Felgueiras.

In the context of subregional development and mobility policies, it is a member of the Tâmega and Sousa Intermunicipal Community (CIM), made up of 12 municipalities, which together account for about 528,000 inhabitants.
