Thanks so much for the accolades. Indeed, performance shots are not so easy.

Behind The Lens

Location

The local communities in my area of SE Louisiana have outdoor concert series where regional entertainers put on excellent programs weekly. This shot of Little Freddie King was taken at one of these venues.

Time

The concerts begin around 6PM when the light is fading but still available for a handheld shot. LFK was kind enough to pose for a portrait series for the small group of local photographers who were there to enjoy the show.

Lighting

To me the lighting was perfect at this late afternoon/early evening shot. It was soft and had a slight golden tone. I shifted the background color to match LFK's jacket and add a bit more gold. This time of day is the absolute best. I still got a clear, crisp shot being hand held yet the softness & shallow depth of field that makes lighting special.

Equipment

I shot this with my one and only, NIkon D5300 with a Tamron mid-range zoom. It is a great lens for near or far, portraits or landscapes. No flash, no tripod, no special filters.

Inspiration

One of my favorite shoots is to record the lifestyle and times of the New Orleans area. We have an abundance of activities, festivals, and concerts by our outstanding music community. There are so many great local artists and each one is exceptional and most are world famous just as is Little Freddie King. It was an informal setting with a crowd of a few hundred. An easy shoot to get up close for portrait style shots. For me, it is a way to record for the history of our area. I also post-event coverage on social media.

Editing

I use Lightroom with various presets for my editing. This was shot in jpeg (before I switched to RAW). The shot was clean from distractions and had a nice background from the beginning. Other than basic enhancements of contrast, vibrancy and clarity the major edit I did was shift the color in the background from a dull grey to the warmer gold color to make his jacket pop. It truly added the finishing touch to this shot to make it work.

In my camera bag

I'm not one to carry a lot of equipment...(nor do I own a lot). My NIkon D5300 with Tamron mid-range zoom is my go-to combo. I use a UV filter to prevent scratching. I always keep a lens cleaning cloth handy to prevent spots that must be edited..

Feedback

Get out and shoot, shoot plenty-plenty and then shoot a few more. High/low~Near/Far. Do your best in composing in cameral. These tips will let you walk away with what you need in editing. Often we don't see things in frame at one spot and we move a foot to one side and it is eliminated. It is easy to delete but impossible to go back and shoot from a different location. As always, Happy shooting....................AdirahsEyes
