Enduring

The cascade falls is a really nice waterfall but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) is pretty tough to photograph. I've been chasing a good picture since September. By my count I've visited this spot 6 times trying to get a good shot but I've gone home empty handed every time. It snowed 10 inches this past weekend and I thought maybe the snow would be a nice change of pace and make for a compelling photo. Unfortunately, several other people must have had the same idea, because by the time I got to the falls, all the nice snow covered rocks that would have made for a nice foreground were covered in dirty footprints. Bummer. Anyway, as I was walking around looking for a shot, I noticed that a half moon was starting to peak out from behind the mountains. I decided to wait for the sun to go down and use the moonlight to light up the falls. The result is what you see here.

Side story: One of the things I've been trying to focus on lately is focus stacking for good depth of field. I tried the technique on this photo, but didn't realize the water running around my tripod bumped the camera mid shot, ruining the background. Naturally I didn't realize this until I got back home. I was able to salvage the shot by photoshopping some other shots of the background into this photo, but it looks like that depth of field will have to wait for another day.
