Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at sunset off Chalkwell Beach at Southend on sea in Essex, UK. I wanted to try and capture a moment with the sea and groyne posts, which was a challenge, as the tide was high and there was little sand and I had to be on quite a steep slop of pebbles! On top of this the tide was coming in and the sun was setting! So I had to set up and compose fast. I shoot with a Fuji XT1 and I was trying out my new graduated filters with a long exposure. The long exposure was a few seconds which would allow the waves to blend in to a misty smoothness, keeping movement, which in my mind created a dreamy calm scene. It was a personal challenge and I enjoyed trying to capture that moment.

Time

Post sunset.

Lighting

I used a graduated filter.

Equipment

Fuji XT1 with the 16-50mm lens and manfrotto pixi tripod

Inspiration

Same scenery and bereft of an idea but determined to find something! So armed with new filters I limited myself to a small scene.

Editing

I shot the photo in RAW so basic editing was needed I try not to manipulate from how I remember the scene looking, but give depth to the colours and make sure detailing is clear.

In my camera bag

I carry very little, often I choose a lens and go that way I have to shoot with what I have. If I have a planned shot I go out with what I need, ie tripod, filter kit and more than one lens. I don’t have a huge kit so there’s not much deliberation!

Feedback

Decide on what you want and go for it but if you see something different when you’re looking through the lens that you like shoot it, don’t leave it. Instinct is often better, I sometimes go out and don’t shoot anything we see things with our eyes so differently and when we try to capture it, it doesn’t always work. Right or wrong I don’t always take the shot. I watch instead!
