A winter sunset over an ice covered Lake Erie as seen from the shoreline in Hamburg, NY. The piled ice in the foreground comes from wave action whenever there are high winds. Lake Erie freezes over during the winter and the ice accumulates at the eastern end as storms pass through. Buffalo actually has a long ice-boom that keeps the ice from building up in the Niagara River.
