Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Bay Ocean Spit, in Tillamook, Oregon. The toy depicted was actually found at the Haceta Head Lighthouse Beach, just south of Yachats, Oregon.

Time

This was taken between 2:30 and 3:30 PST.

Lighting

I used all natural lighting. The sun was filtered a little by coastal fog and minimally overcast conditions. The intensity of the sun varied from moment to moment.

Equipment

This was captured with an Nikon D3200. Nikkor 55-300mm VR lens. Handheld. Natural Light.

Inspiration

I was attempting to capture some unique shots with driftwood, while I let every forget I was present. I looked over to see my girlfriends son playing with a toy he had reclaimed from the muck, of another beach the previous day. He was running along like as depicted, repeating the process over and over. With the reflections from my POV so profound from my POV, I made a snap decision to see if I could get an action photo with reflection. I quickly adjusted to shutter priority and grabbed a quick couple shots before the opportunity went away.

Editing

I made very minor adjustments to exposure, clarity, very slightly sharpened, and reduced the temperature a stop or two in lightroom.

In my camera bag

Extra SD Cards, Extra Batteries, Speed Flash, Lens Filters, Cleaners, 18-55mm VR, 55-300mm VR, Table Tri-Pod, 57" Tri-Pod, 52" Tri-Pod, 4 LED Lamps (light-box) and Tri-Pods

Feedback

Be patient. I find the best shots are candid rather than planned. Often I will act distracted until those around me lose interest int the fact I have a camera, at which point they relax and be themselves. Most the time they are unaware I have even taken their photo until after the fact. For a scene like this I like to take a few shots in various directions that I may point my camera. This way I have an idea of the settings I will need to attain on the fly, if something spontaneous happens and I need to think fast. A fast shutter speed and Vibration Reduction were key to this shot. I also might ad that when photographing children and reflections, it is important to get low. Bring yourself down to their level and maybe just a bit more.I intentionally did not have a straight horizon. I just felt it more interesting with the way it was shot.
