For me, visual storytelling is an attempt to interpret the human experience. It provides a creative outlet to not necessarily make sense of the world around us... but to observe, engage, spark dialogue and speak loudly without saying a word. Imagery shaped my imagination as a child. It spurred curiosity and wonder. It often depicted faraway lands that spoke to my soul via their unimaginable beauty. Often, it usurped my innocent narrative of the world and showed me what true tragedy and hardship look like while simultaneously exemplifying the fortitude and courage of the human spirit. A spirit that has no bounds or isn't confined by walls. Perhaps, most importantly..photography has taught me to listen.
This photo was taken in the small community of Asuncion de Quiquibey pretty remote into the Bolivian rainforest. It remains one of my favorite portraits I've taken. I'll never know what this girl was thinking as she watched her father painstakingly work in the exceptional heat and humidity to collect food for the family. Much is left to interpretation; however, I prefer that. It's a reminder of the power of visual storytelling and why a singular moment can leave an indelible impression on my soul that answers nothing but speaks volumes and creates some version of meaning.
