Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo right in my yard. My backyard is 29,000 acres of the Cheatham County Game Reserve in Ashland City, TN. I had gone down into the woods to collect some sweet pea to transplant in my yard. It grew wonderfully and had always been my favorite flower and this particular bloom was so terribly perfect I couldn’t let it get away so I went in got my iPhone 7, I believe, and I took a couple shots, this one was my favorite.

Time

It was around 3 pm. And very warm out.

Lighting

The lighting at the time I took the photograph, the sun was just at the beginning of its westward course for the evening and not directly overhead. And because I live on the top and edge of a ridge the sum brings out the best colors in the flowers on that side of my yard around 3pm.

Equipment

Well I just had my iPhone because my old Nikon 8400 was at my daughters house. But I was fairly surprised when I viewed the pictures on my computer they were just so full of that sweet pe bloom. One, I thought, was better than the others and that is this oone that shows the darker pink veins in the petals and all the different shades of pink and how beautifully shaped the petals were and the contrasting green I just thought that I had I actually captured what Ii had seen with my own eyes, you cannot really do better than that. I was very pleased that my iPhone could capture that!

Inspiration

The perfectness of the flower. It was the most perfect sweet pea flower I had ever sent in all its tranquility on that hot summer afternoon. It cooled me to look at it in all its perfect detail.

Editing

Yes I gave it some sharpness so you could see the lines of deep pink in its petals. I cannot really remember except that there just was not much I had to do because it already looked just like what I had seen with my own eyes.

In my camera bag

I have been hooked on iPhone camera pretty much since I took this photo. I now have an iPhone XS and many different camera apps and editing programs. I like to shoot RAW mostly. I do have an old Nikon 8400 that I get out once in a while but my iPhone actually does a better job, I know some very accomplished photographers will use their iPhones as opposed to their very expensive camera equipment when they are not ‘on the job’. I have heard them exclaim that if they are in a group of people or shooting people they don’t use their iPhone because it just doesn’t seem very professional even though their iPhone would do just as good a job as their other equipment but it just would not look very professional, that being the only reason for not using the iPhone. So since I am not a professional I use my iPhone most all the time, it works great for me.

Feedback

I did not walk into my yard and immediately see it, I caught it out of the corner of my eye. The colors were getting my eyes attention. I waited until the sun was not directly overhead, like I had mentioned earlier, I waited till it was beginning it’s western course. The overhead sun kind of brought out a lot of the subtle whites in the flower and the pink was suffering. So I waited and watched. All the different shades of pink really came out around 3 pm. So I did not wait for the magic hour to come and I took my shots and glad I was when I saw them. I looked at the same flower around 6 pm and by then the pink completely took over and you couldn’t really see those lighter areas as the sum was behind all the trees on top of other hills in the area and had darkened the flower and the vibrancy wasn’t showing as well. so I was glad I had not waited. The magic hour is not always the best time to take a shot. Keep an eye on what you are planning to shoot and you will know the right time to take your shot. If you look at the shot over different times of the day or night.
