Between 1964 and 1974, the MV Nordeney was the transmission base for the sea-based station Radio Veronica. Much loved by the people of the Netherlands, Veronica had broadcast from offshore since 1960 in order to circumvent government licensing laws. The station's previous ship had been the former light vessel Borkum Riff.

Despite a huge public demonstration in 1973 in support of Radio Veronica and other offshore radio stations, new laws were introduced outlawing the marine broadcasters. Similarly to the Marine Offences Bill introduced by the British government in 1967 to outlaw popular offshore stations, the Dutch law made both broadcasting from a ship, providing supplies to, or or advertising on an unlicensed station an offence.

In 1976 Veronica was granted an official licence and was able to broadcast on land.

One of the last surviving ships from the 1960s marine broadcasting era, Norderney is now anchored in Amsterdam Harbour, where she serves as a bar and club. There is very little aboard to indicate the pioneering part she played in Dutch broadcasting history.
