Behind The Lens

Location

I have taken this photo in the Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India. This park is famous for domestic and migratory birds. Every winter migratory birds from Siberia and cold regions of the earth come here for nesting. Many bird watchers and photographers come here every year in large numbers every winter from all over the world.

Time

This is one of my most favorite images. In the winter evening when I was searching for some bird in close range enough so that I can shot them with my 100-400 mm Canon Lens, as I know this was not the good lens for long-distance bird photography. My efforts were not gone in vain. I noticed that this Pied Kingfisher, not very far, was readying itself for some fish hunt, and also when the sun was tilted enough to through light on the one side of this Pied Kingfisher, I took this shot.

Lighting

This was the evening time shot i.e. in the golden hour. In the evening birds were in a playful mood besides feeding and also the light coming from the sun was slanting and illuminating only one side of the bird and the background remained under-exposed to some degree.

Equipment

This shot was taken on Canon 5 DII with Canon 100-400 mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

This beautiful bird was the inspiration. I am basically nature and wildlife photographer and regularly visits National Parks for some good images of birds as well as landscapes. Other fellow photographers’ works always inspire me. And, I also in search of a bird who is not only in close range and at the same time away from the cluttered background so that big aperture could make a difference. This bird passed all my parameters and in fact, this bird inspired me to take her shot.

Editing

Yes, done brightness, contrast, and some saturation of colors in the LightRoom. The camera cannot compare with the human eye. There is always a need for some software to match the mood of the scene or to do some creativity.

In my camera bag

My bag is not big. I am using camera Canon 5 D Mark II, Canon 24-105 mm Lens, and Canon 100-400 mm lens. I have also some Lee filters. Yes, I also carry a Manfrotto tripod in my hand.

Feedback

Carry a lens that can shoot the bird from long distance. The time of the shoot is also important.
