Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Peabody Estate Forest Preserve in Oak Brook, IL. Peabody was a wealthy strip miner back in the early 20th century. His estate was taken over by the DuPage County Forest Preserve. This is at the back of a recreated Italian chapel on the property across from the mansion.

Time

I had met up with the model around mid-afternoon on a weekend in August 2017. It was a very warm and sunny, summer day.

Lighting

This particular photo was taken with natural lighting. The back of the chapel was shaded or we were under cloud cover at the time these shots were taken. I cannot remember the exact details as this particular shot was taken back in 2017.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Canon EOS Rebel SL1 and my kit 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

As with most of my outdoor shoots the idea is fairly general. Go to a location and see what we have to work with. I saw the lip on the back of the chapel that had room for the model to stand on, and the arch of the bricks provided a nice frame. The title comes from the lyrics of an AC/DC song.

Editing

I did minimal post processing. I corrected any light balancing and enhanced some color, but that it is. I try to keep my editing light and let the subject and setting tell more of the story.

In my camera bag

At the time this photo was taken, I was still fairly new to working with people and only had my 18-55mm kit lens and my 75-350mm. Since then I have added a 55mm prime lens and a 35mm prime lens.

Feedback

My advice is to, sometimes, be as flexible and general with your ideas as possible, and to make sure the person you're working with is on the same page. Be open to using the setting you're at. Most times you're going to get things you're not expecting and sometimes those are best images you capture.
