Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in an abandoned one-room school in rural Missouri. Not expecting to find anything inside, I was shocked to find this sitting in the middle of the room, as if someone played it and left, never looking back.

Time

This was taken mid-day, around noon. I had been driving around on rural roads waiting for something to catch my eye when I spotted this old country school. I had a blast exploring the area and happening on some unique finds.

Lighting

The lighting was the natural lighting in the room, coming in through broken windows. It was a bright, sunny day, so the light that filtered inside the building was all I needed to capture the image. I try to shoot with natural light as much as possible. I don't have any other lighting options in my arsenal aside from the camera's built-in flash, and I prefer not to use it if I can help it.

Equipment

I took this photo with a Canon EOS Rebel T3i, with a 18-55mm lens (actual focal length was 44mm), hand-held, no flash.

Inspiration

I pulled over to photograph an old rural one-room schoolhouse and upon peeking inside, saw this piano--weathered, worn, and left behind. I immediately fell in love with the character of this instrument and was drawn to the details and textures of the chipped keys. Of all the country miles I covered on this day, this was my favorite find. It was so unexpected and I was so excited to have the chance to document it's current condition.

Editing

The only post-processing I did here was a bit of sharpening and to convert the image to black and white. While the color image is interesting, I felt like this image has a much stronger impact in black and white.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my Canon EOS Rebel T3i body, an 18-55mm lens, a 55-250mm lens, and a Tamron 150-600mm lens. I carry 4 back-up batteries and two SD cards (the one in my camera is a 16GB and my backup is an 8GB). I also have a set of magnifying lenses that I keep with my at all times for macro-related shots. I keep a tripod close by and just recently invested in a low-angle tripod base. I also carry a Lensball, which is often fun to experiment with as well.

Feedback

When I'm out shooting I'm always on the look out for anything that might make for really interesting detail shots. I love to get up close and personal with objects and shoot them from every angle I can think of, knowing I'm bound to fall in love with one of them. Even if you aren't sure if it's something you like now, shoot it anyway. I'm often surprised by what I like the most after uploading my photos after a shoot. Sometimes it's the shots that were nearly an afterthought that surprise you.
