I'm not sure why this little hill is not covered with trees (it is rocky enough for trees to outcompete the grasses and shrubs). Probably some long-ago fire. But the grassy slope to the right faces east, which is not as hot and dry as the slope to the left, which faces southeast and south, is more exposed to the sun, and is hotter and drier.
