Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at the Denver Zoo in the Tropical Discovery zone while I was on a date day with my husband.

Time

It was early afternoon when I got this shot, but it was indoors, so the time of day wasn't a consideration for this shot.

Lighting

The area was dimly lit as it was indoors, so I had to increase the ISO a bit and open up the aperture in order to get a proper exposure.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D750 with the kit lens 24-120mm f/4. Handheld and no flash.

Inspiration

I thought this puffer fish had an interesting expression. I wanted to challenge myself to get a sharp photo of the fish in the aquarium in low light.

Editing

I did some minor edits in Adobe Lightroom including crop, contrast and clarity adjustment, and some color adjustments.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon D750 and depending on my subject for the day, I will bring a wide angle lens, a medium range lens, and/or my telephoto lens. I keep cleaning supplies in my bag, and some lens filters.

Feedback

For an aquarium shot, I bump up the ISO and open the aperture so the I don't have to slow down the shutter speed too much. There often isn't room at an aquarium for a tripod and fish move around quickly, so you need a faster shutter speed to stop them in motion.
