Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as I was driving to Southern California from Lake Tahoe, a blizzard was about to hit the road ahead of us and these were the first flurries that started.

Time

I remember waking up early because we wanted to make sure to get ahead of the storm. This was just after we descended the mountains and it opened into the highway around 9 am. The flurries and the storm were just starting.

Lighting

I remember just driving and thinking how I wanted to get ahead of the storm but I couldn't miss an opportunity to take a picture of what I saw. The roads were pretty empty since most people were avoiding them.

Equipment

I used my Canon T1i with my 50mm 1.8 lens.

Inspiration

Living in southern California meant the only time I got to see a storm like this was if I went to the mountains. I've always loved going to the mountains and just taking in pretty snow storm. Even though we were trying to get ahead of the brunt of the storm it was just so beautiful to see it start.

Editing

This was shot in color but I liked the effect that black and white gave this photograph.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon T1i, two prime lens, 50 mm and 85 mm, along with my telephoto lens.

Feedback

I think this photo was so effective because I was just at the right place at the right time. If you live in a mountainous area, I would go to one of the curves in the road just before a storm is about to set in.
