It's always a thrill to see bison in Yellowstone National Park, but to capture them coming down the road with frosted faces is epic! I was on a snowcoach traveling into Old Faithful when we rounded the corner and came upon these beauties.

During the winter months, most of the roads in Yellowstone Park are closed to vehicle traffic. However, you can access the interior of the park via snowmobile or snowcoach. This image was taken while riding aboard a snowcoach. We happened around a bend to see this herd of bison coming at us head on. Our driver stopped, I jumped out to get the shot, and the bison continued to move past our coach, as though we were invisible.Lighting
Quite often in Yellowstone during the winter, the lighting can be overcast, due in part to the many smoky plumes from all the geysers. Every day the light changes - you need to be prepared for both bluebird days and gray skies.Equipment
Nikon D750; 28-300mm lens, handheld, ISO 400, 1/200 sec. at f 7.1Inspiration
This was a matter of being at the right place at the right time. It isn't often that you see a group of bison coming at you, with the ideal background, and one of the bison in the lead. The composition was perfect - pure luck!Editing
For post-processing, I often use the Dehaze and Clarity sliders in Lightroom; if needed, I crop to make the image stronger in composition. In my camera bag
Nikon D750 and Nikon Z6 bodies; 28-300 lens, 80-400mm, 24-70mm, 14-30mm lens Extra batteries, a few filters, and lots of patience!Feedback
Seeing Yellowstone Park in the winter is a surreal experience. There are plenty of photo opportunities between the critters and the landscapes.
