Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center in Slatington, PA

Time

It was about 10am when I spotted this little guy having his breakfast.

Lighting

It was natural lighting.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D3400 on a tripod with my Micro Nikkor 40mm 1:2.8G lens.

Inspiration

Who could resist a shot like this! The timing was in play all around. Great lighting and a willing subject. I have many photos of this Praying Mantis. He feasted on 6 flies in thirty minutes! I was just starting out in macro photography and after this session, I was hooked!

Editing

The only post processing was a bit of cropping. There was no need to mess with anything. To me, it was perfect.

In my camera bag

My camera bag consists of my Nikon D3400, a 40mm macro lens, a 70-300mm 1:4.5-6.3G, an 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G lens, an extra battery, a Promaster Flash, a mini tripod, a full size tripod, a pen and paper and chapstick.

Feedback

Be patient and as quiet as possible. Move slowly. Also, I like to leave things as I find them. He was eating when I started, he was eating when I left him. Give them space. Even though I was using a 40mm lens, I kept some distance between us. We have great opportunities to capture the wonders of nature. There is no need to disrupt the eco system. And no need to bother someone having breakfast!
