Polar bear (Ursus maritimus)
Svalbard
This cub does not have any siblings to play with, and its mother is only occasionally and reluctantly returning the playful approaches. As with all kids it’s looking for things to do and fun things to discover, and here it’s likely wondering what its mother is going to do next.
From our point of view this is a super cute and cuddly cub and it’s hard not to utter “aaaw” when you see it in such a child-like posture, but soon it will become a formidable predator if it survives to adulthood.
With the sea ice shrinking fast, so is the access to food, so it is in luck to have a mother that has found a way to sea ice in the summer, as that is where the food is. But soon the sea ice will be a shadow of its past, and much further to the north than this at 81.31 degrees north, so the future is truly uncertain.
