This was taken in my home. Cut this palm back from a tree in my garden. Who knew it has a stem of thorns!Time
I’m not sure about time exactly but I think it was late afternoon.Lighting
I have loved the window light in this room. It’s nothing special but it’s nice even diffused light which I really enjoy. So this is simply side on to a reasonably large window.Equipment
This was taken with my Nikon D610 full framed camera and my nikkor 24-70 zoom lens.Inspiration
I’m not very big on ‘normal’ portraits. I enjoy using different ways of framing my subjects. I wanted to do a boy portrait and I love all botanicals so I was inspired to do a botanical portrait without flowers!Editing
Yes I processed this image in Lightroom. I usually custom edit and mainly with this I added contrast to the subject. I adjusted the green with the colour sliders to achieve a green that enhanced without distracting from the subject. I brought down the exposure around the subject to pull in the focus. That’s pretty much it!In my camera bag
In my bag at the moment I have the D7000 and D610 bodies. I have a 50 1.4 prime lens I just love the shallow depth and how fast it is in low light. A 35 lens and the 105mm for it’s gorgeous creamy bokeh. My workhorse faithful lens is the 24-70 which is super versatile. Flash is the SB 900.Feedback
I guess just using what you have to hand can be a good way to stretch yourself. I like to get creative with what’s around me. When using window light I turn my subject until I’m happy with how the light is falling on the face and in the eyes. Then I will place my framing , in this case the palm. I tried a few shots at different depths of field but in this image I liked the subject and framing in focus. It was shallow enough to get a soft drop of at the edges. Then I used post processing to bring more focus to the subject. I think you can achieve strong portraights with simple available window light and by bringing interest to the portrait by adding in and interesting shape or frame.
