This photo was taken in Punalu'u, Hawaii. The sand is black because when lava makes contact with the cold water of the ocean, often times it becomes almost explosive as small shards quickly dry and separate. The ocean currents smooth these shards over and eventually they wash up on the shore to create beautiful black sand beaches. It was truly a beautiful and wonderful experience to walk on these sands.
