Behind The Lens
Location
I took this image in my backyard. Not a glamorous studio but out in the garden. I was feeling frustrated at my inability to progress as a photographer and tried experimenting, trying to do something different. So the image is contrived.Time
The image was taken midmorning. The flower would have been in sun, though not full sun as in midday.Lighting
Photographers need to pay attention to where shadows are falling. A shadow across the image or in the position can spoil the image. I have learnt the hard way to watch the shadow.Equipment
At the time this image was taken I felt I was not a very experience photographer. My equipment is very minimal. My camera: a Panasonic Lumix DMC fz50. Aperture f/8?ISO 100?Shutter 10/4000?Focal Length 74/10?I hand-held the camera.Inspiration
I am in a situation where I need to use my imagination and use any and all situations and subjects. It was a period when the lilies were in flower, their perfection and colour are eye catching. I wished to create something different and looked around my garden for ideas, inspiration and finally came up with the image of a frog figurine in the flower. The creature is a Great Barred Frog from Queensland and is endangered. It's story has caught my attention and I wished to make an image of it.Editing
The only post-processing I did was to blur the background to emphasize the flowers and frog.In my camera bag
I am a minimalist. I carry only my camera, maybe a macro lens, and latterly I have acquired a wide-angle which will be part of my equipment.Feedback
What I think is important is watching the light, the shadows, especially in a garden. Shadows can be utilised for effect but they can also spoil.
