Behind The Lens

Location

This photo started out life as a white mannequin head being used in a display for jewelry at an indoor artists event. I asked permission of the artist to use the head in a photo study and she was quite happy to do so.

Time

It was in the afternoon but the lighting was all artificial inside lighting.

Lighting

There were two lamps shining on the white mannequin head. One was yellowy gold, the other hot white. Plus overhead can lighting.

Equipment

I shot the with a Nikon D5300 using a Nikon DX 18-55mm

Inspiration

I like a challenge when searching for subjects to shoot. The plain white head and the lighting seemed to called to me. There was a certain despair, seriousness in the mannequins face and I wanted to bring that to life. I took numerous photos some with flash others without. I manipulated the camera shooting from different angles until the color started to show itself. I also used a brown napkin to diffuse the flash on a number of shots. This most likely was one of them as the brown tones really showed through on this example.

Editing

I don't shoot in raw. I try to get any "special effects" by manipulating the camera. On this particular photo I used i t straight out of the camera did a slight color enhancement about three clicks on Picasa 3. I also adjusted the Vignette to cause the photo to pop a bit more. I think is a sample of overexposure that worked well for me.

In my camera bag

Nikon 5300, NikonDX 18-55mm lens, Tameron AF70-300mm, and my new Youngnuo YN50mm F1.8N prime lens. I occasionaly carry colored filtered for the gray day on the water. I rarely if ever use them.

Feedback

Take the shot! Not every challenge is going to be an award winning shot. Try to look at the subject that is out of the ordinary or different that everyone else is doing. Take the chance especially with different lighting sources. Incandescent and fluorescent can sometime give you a look that was totally unexpected.
