Behind The Lens

Location

Crater Lake National Park

Time

The picture was taken midday. It was crisp and cold and the snow was still a frozen crust, not congenial to cross-country skiing. But we did that anyway.

Lighting

The picture was more about composition, using the trees to frame the lake.

Equipment

“The best camera is the one you have in your pocket.” As I skied around looking for a good site to capture the lake I shot this one freehand from my skis. We went to Crater Lake to capture the winter Crater Lake experience. Our home, Mt. Shasta, was in the winter doldrums with not much snow. Crater Lake, on the other hand had been deceivers several feet of new snow just two weeks earlier.

Inspiration

Love of the mountains!

Editing

None

In my camera bag

My travel bag includes a Nikon with two lenses, but for a ski trip, the iPhone in my back pocket is ideal.

Feedback

Study the composition, including the foreground and the background. If the two don’t work together, narrow depth of field to accentuate the intended subject. I sometimes move all around until the subject and the background fall into symmetry. I shot three or four shots until this one came together for me.
