Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken in Lufkin, TX at the Ellen Trout Zoo. The zoo was started in the 1960's after a local businessman was given a baby hippo at Christmas, and had no where to put it.Time
This was at about 8:30 am in the early winter.Lighting
It was partially cloudy and had soft light as a result. The train was making a trial run before beginning its day of thrilling children.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D850 with a Nikon 24-70 lens from a tripod very low to the ground.Inspiration
Dr. George Thannisch, a pediatrician, had the idea and provided much of the manual labor, along with his teenage son, to construct the mile of track in 1969. I had made this image of the zoo's new train to give to him in honor of his incredible effort. The train had over 1.5 million riders through 2010. The money from $1 charge has funded many projects for children in the community. It is operated by the Lufkin Host Lions Club by volunteers.Editing
The usual basic processing was done in Lightroom, to optimize the contrast, color balance, and exposure. The original image was a RAW capture. In my camera bag
I have a wide range of Nikon zoom lens from 14-24 to 200-400. The 24-70 is the most commonly used lens. My Gitzo tripod provides a solid base for the longer exposures. The Nikon D850 has been an excellent upgrade from previous cameras.Feedback
Good images, most often, come from an awareness of the lighting potential for a spot. I have used "The Photographers Ephemeris has been an excellent tool locally as in this image and in trip planning. If you have the opportunity to go back to the same spot on repeated shoots, you will find that the quality improves with practice.
