This photo was take in early October on a family vacation to Ireland. We were on a bus tour, so I didn't have a lot of time to set up and take photos of the Cliffs of Moher. I was just wondering around to find some angle that was different from the standard postcard shots. I have other photos that show a more total view of the area.Time
This photo was taken in the early afternoon. The sun is to my left since we are on the Atlantic side of Ireland. The time of year was early October.Lighting
I didn't have much choice as to lighting since we were on a bus tour. The sun is left of my position.Equipment
This was taken with my older Minolta Maxxium 7D and a Tamron 28 - 300 lens. The shot was hand held because of the sufficient light and the built-in stabilization in the Minolta camera.Inspiration
I wanted to take some photos that were removed from the traditional post card type of images. As you can tell, I was walking along the cliff edge just looking for nice angles. This view shows the height of the cliffs and lack of beach below. The Cliffs of Moher is a region of large surf that is used by world class surfers. I wanted to show the risk of surfing in the area.Editing
I try to do limited post processing of my photos. I will crop when I feel that it helps the photo. I also with adjust the lighting if I feel it is needed. I didn't do anything to this photo because I was happy with the outcome.In my camera bag
I normally carry two Sony DSLR's one is the A100 and the other is the A77II. These have replaced the older Maxxium. I still have this type of camera versus the mirrorless versions because of the number of A mount lenses I have and enjoy. Beside the Tamron, I have two Sigma lenses. One is the 70-200 F2.8 lens and the 10-20 4 - 5.8 lens. These were purchased after the trip to Ireland. I have other lenses that are basically kit lenses. I will carry a flash unit if I expect to take people shots for fill light purposes. I have a couple of tripods that I pack when I know that I have time to setup the shot. I don't carry it, but I still have an old Minolta film camera and a couple of lenses.Feedback
All of the reading I have done tells you to walk around. That means forward and backwards as well as other directions, forward was not exactly possible on this shot. Take some of the standard shots just to make sure you have a memory of the trip or visit. By walking around, I was able to isolate this shot and keep people out of the scene. I have another shot where I wanted the people on the top of the cliff in silhouette to show some perspective. Because I don't spend a lot of time in post processing, and I don't carry prime lenses, I will zoom in and out to see what fits my eye. Keep in mind what you want to capture. Don't be afraid to post process, I will crop photos and adjust lighting if needed. I have taken out objects that impact the photo quality, but I prefer to remove them by moving or zooming.
