I took this photo at the lake in the city of Ko?evje in Slovenia. The girls were lying down on one of the piers that lead into the lake.Time
The photo was taken at 5:11 PM on the 9th of September.Lighting
I didn't use any additional lighting only the available natural light.Equipment
I used my trusty old Sony NEX 5n camera with the standard 18-55mm kit lens set at 27mm.Inspiration
I wanted to capture a relaxed but at the same time intimate vibe between two friends. Despite being so close to one another, each one is still immersed in their own world, their own mind. So close, but so far away. I also wanted to create some kind of symmetry between the both of them.Editing
Because the sun was already quite low at the time of the day you can see there is a fair amount of shadow on one side. Since the red haired girl didn't get the same amount of light, I had to fix the light a little in post. I also rotated and cropped the image to achieve a more dynamic look.In my camera bag
Usually just my Sony NEX 5n camera, the 18-55mm Sony kit lens and an old Zeiss 50mm 1,4 manual lens.Feedback
When trying to take a photo of a model lying on the ground you have to be even more aware of the light and the shadows. In the case you have two models lying next to each other and facing the opposite direction it creates even more difficulties, since one model is bound to get less light or even be completely in the shadow. In my case the pier they were laying on was quite narrow, so there was only one possible direction in which they could lay down. You could overcome this problem with some additional light or a reflector, or just choose a time of the day, when both models will be better lit.
