Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in our living room one afternoon. We had balloons still kicking around from a birthday party and my son was having fun playing with them! I couldn’t resist grabbing my camera and snapping a few pics of him.

Time

I took this photo around mid afternoon, the light streams in through our doorway creating an amazing block of light, some of my favourite pictures have been taken in that block of light.

Lighting

I had already snapped a few pictures of him kicking the balloons around and I noticed that the light would shine through the balloons giving them an amazing glow. So I asked him to hold the balloon up off the ground and it was the perfect angle in that block of light with the sun shining in.

Equipment

This was shot with my old Canon 50D and my 18-200 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

At the time I was doing a 365 day photo challenge. I was trying to find different areas around my house with unique lighting and that doorway light has become one of my favourite!

Editing

I use camera raw and photoshop for all of my post -processing. This one didn’t take much editing - I loved the feel of converting it into black and white. I darkened the areas around the edges so the focus was on the light coming in through the door.

In my camera bag

I now have a Canon 6D Mark II and a 24-70mm 2.8 lens. I still pack around my old workhorse 50D just incase!

Feedback

Just experiment with different lighting at different times of the day in your home. Look for interesting areas of light coming in. I used the balloons my son was playing with to see how the light would reflect through it.
