The portrait was captured in my house where I have my in-home studio. I work with a fairly minimal setup so I love being able to capture great portraits without having to spend thousands upon thousands on gear and studio space.Time
We started out around 1PM so I could utilize the light I have coming in from a large bay-window straight in front of the model. However, as the light moved I had to add extra light. This portrait is captured around 3-4PM.Lighting
As the day progressed the light moved to the windows that I have on the model's right side and I decided to go from full natural light to add a Speedlite on her left side so I could utilize both the natural light source while still keeping crispness and detail in the portrait. I love playing with both natural light and artificial light and I find that the combination of the two can yield some incredibly interesting results.Equipment
I used my Canon 5DII equipped with an 85mm lens. It was all handheld. For fill light I added a Godox TT560 with a small octagonal softbox.Inspiration
My model, Liane Boyko, is an incredibly beautiful woman and she has a wide range of expressions. I love getting up close and personal to my subjects and Liane was no exception. Her eyes needed to be captured in just the right way so when I saw this shot on the back of my camera, I was absolutely thrilled.Editing
I tried keeping as much skin texture as possible. Liane has great skin, so I actually didn't need to do a lot. After clearing up the skin, I used dodge and burn to enhance the highlights and shadows on her face, included her eyes. I really enjoyed the blue'ish color scheme that was already present, so I toned it in a way, that would enhance that just a tad bit more.In my camera bag
I love my Canon 5D II. It has become my workhorse and I am absolutely dreading the day when it won't be working anymore (let's face it, it's getting old and I haven't exactly spared it from use). I always have my two favourite lenses a 50mm 1.4 and an 85mm with me. Those two I use interchangeably but each of them has periods of times where they are my favourite lens. Currently, my 50mm is the one I use the most. I am not exactly sure why except that I absolutely love the expressions I am able to capture with it. When I want to do something softer, I reach for my 85mm. I also always carry two Speedlites with me (cheap, made in China stuff but it works), just so I can make sure, that I am able to create an amazing image even though the light might not be with me. I especially, as mentioned before, love to mix natural and artificial light.Feedback
Just make sure you have a good connection with your model. Do not be afraid to go in close and do not be afraid to push your model a little bit out of her comfort zone (be sure to check in with her boundaries). Use soft light (preferably natural) if you have it, or else make sure to diffuse your light to mimic natural light.
