I took this photo in Goshen, KentuckyTime
This is one of my favorite images... at least of the day. This winter has been unusually cold and snowy in Kentucky. But this particular Saturday, while it was only 18 degrees, the roads were finally clear. So around 3:00pm I got in the car and left my comfy couch in Louisville, KY and drove the 15 miles to Goshen. My favorites horses were out in the fields, and this one wanted to give me her "good side".Lighting
The lighting on this day changed often. It was snowing on and off and the clouds kept moving. I had a pretty overcast sky, but it was perfect for the moment.Equipment
I used my trust canon 7D markii and old faithful Sigma 18-250mm lens. No tripod, no flash, just me and this beautiful horse.Inspiration
I am always inspired by the regal stature of horses. So, when the roads were clear enough, I knew there would be something magical about capturing a horse in the snow. I knew the white backdrop against their fluffy, brown, winter coats would give me the nice contrast every photographer looks for.Editing
I don't usually do much post processing past enhancing what is already there, but I felt a little different about this one. I brought the RAW photo into Lightroom and enhanced the reds and adjusted the white balance because the white were a tad bit too yellow for me. I also thought this one would look good with a matte finish and that was about it!In my camera bag
On a day like this I will normally just bring my canon 7D markii, the canon 50mm1.8, my Sigma 18-250, and the Canon 10-14.Feedback
If you are wanting to capture something similar to this make the necessary adjustments to use a fast shutter speed because animals tend to move a lot. However, they are very photogenic so all you have to do it fire away and you are bound to get something good.
