Behind The Lens

Location

This beautiful live oak lined park and promenade lies along the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans in the city of Mandeville. It is a favorite spot for me to shoot as one has the opportunity to shoot to the east for sunrise or the west for sunsets... beautiful backdrops for any shoot.

Time

A thick fog had settled in for this winter morning and was slow to dissipate for this mid-morning shot. The live oak hardly has a discernable shadow giving an evenness to the light with the only bright area forward from the lone bench.

Lighting

I like that the light is the strongest but still subdued forward from the bench without harsh shadows from the expansive live oak. It lends a softness that fog naturally adds to a shot. The fog was still thick enough to allow a soft light to the center of the shot.

Equipment

I was using my 'go to' equipment of a Nikon 5300 with a Tamron zoom. It is my most versatile combo and works well in most situations.

Inspiration

I love to weather watch here in SE Louisiana. Our winters are not usually very cold and often conducive to fog. Early foggy mornings are a favorite time for me to get out for a shoot. I love to take loop drives where I circle my area using different highways and paths to explore the ever-changing vistas. I enjoy framing a shot by using objects in the view such as I did in this composition by using the spreading branch of this massive live oak dripping in Spanish Moss.

Editing

This shot was one of those rare 'out of the camera' just about perfect ones. I did very little post-processing on this one.

In my camera bag

I most often carry my Nikon 5300 with Tamron mid-range zoom as I used in this shot. I do carry my Nikon Macro lens for the small details I find in nature that need that extra definition. Cleaning cloths and filters are always near.

Feedback

I have learned that the most important thing is to get out there and shoot. Often it is because of the weather you can catch an interesting mood to transform the shot from a picture to a photograph. Happy shooting!
