Location
I took this photo at home in a make-shift studio setting. The space I used was small and simple. No fancy equipment.Time
Time of day was not relevant to this shot as it was done all inside.Lighting
I borrowed a friends 'light' and reflector. Didn't quite know how to use it and had to try a multitude of positions. My efforts were rewarded with a bright but not washed out complexion on my face.Equipment
For this shot, I had used tripod, one studio light, remote (it's a selfie) & my Nikon D5300Inspiration
For several years I worked on myself (actually a lifetime) in a concentrated manner improving my core self and my 'exterior' in style. It is also important to me to preserve my family heritage. Photographing my hand-me-downs from my grandmother has been important. The necklace & earrings in this shot were hers. She loved bling before bling was a thing.Editing
I used only slight post-processing. The main one that is critical in portraits is to get the white balance correct. It is affected by lighting choice and needs to look natural. I brightened the subject while keeping the background dark and simple to keep focus on my faceIn my camera bag
I have only one camera that meets all my needs, Nikon D5300. With it I used (and carry) a Tamron 18-400mm & my Nikon macro. I'm a fanatic on keeping my lens clean so a cloth is always near.Feedback
Practice, trial & error are a huge part of photography. Keep on shooting, trying variations and learning new skills as each and all are critical to developing your own personal style and subject treatment.
