That's what I said the first time i met her in person and saw her eyes!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image in a suite at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego approximately 2015

Time

Approximately at around 5 -5:30 PM

Lighting

This was taken with natural light only from a large north facing window in the summer time so sun was still pretty high at that time the building across from the hotel was a light beige/ off white color which provided a giant soft reflector effect on her face. Model is about 3 feet from the window in total shade kneeling next to the bed.

Equipment

I shot this with a Sony a7 II and a Sony/Carl Zeiss 55mm f1.8 hand held no other equipment for this image was needed.

Inspiration

This was the first time I worked with this model, Kristy Jessica aka Pure Rebel, but, I had seen her work previously and I had noticed what intense beautiful blue eyes she has so I made a note to take a portrait close up of her featuring those eyes. My inspiration was the cover from the renowned photographer Steve McCurry from National Geographic cover in 1985.

Editing

Minimal post processing, adjusted brightness, contrast and cleaned up red veins in the white of her eyes.

In my camera bag

Depending on the type of shoot I am working on, I will have my medium format Hasselblad H4X with a Phase One digital back an older model {30+) model. Along with a couple of film backs for 120 medium format film photography that work with the Hasselblad. Will add my Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and an 85mm prime and a 40mm prime for the Canon. I tried mirrorless for a while, like when I took this image with a Sony a7 II, however, I like the focusing and details captured by both of my current cameras. Will add if needed a Godox AD200 , a folding 22" beauty dish and a couple of flashes for rim light or hair light if doing portraiture. Miscellaneous items like batteries for both cameras, SD cards and CF cards, blower, flash meter, and grey card, bracket for both cameras along with a Really Right Stuff head for my tripod.

Feedback

Window light is to me, the most beautiful soft light you can ask for, depending on the time of the day and the location of the window, you have to adjust the position of the subject so she or he is not being hit directly by the light, but, instead is right next to the light. A north facing window is ideal as the sun will not hit the subject or the window directly, if the sun is too strong, have the model move back just a bit into the shadows or if room is too dark away from window, add a reflector on the shadow side of the room to off set the contrast on the subject. Take your time if you just started, take an image, make a small adjustment and take another one and so on. With time and practice your eyes will tell you what you need and how to position your subject in relation to the room and ambient light. Most of all have fun.
